Civil society organizations condemn arresting merchants in Taiz

TAIZ, Oct. 21 (YPA) – Civil society organizations, unions and syndicates in Taiz city condemned on Sunday the arrest of representatives of the Taiz Traders Forum by the coalition forces in the city.

The organizations said in a statement that the arrests came after they announced a strike in protest against the collapse of the local currency and the deterioration of the economic situation.

The statement expressed regret for what they described as cowardly acts and incitement against the Taiz Traders Forum.

It called on the local and security authorities affiliated with the coalition to establish the manifestations of the state, respect the rights of civilians, move quickly to stop these measures, immediately release detainees and protect the safety of citizens.

The statement stressed the determination of civil society organizations, unions and syndicates in their peaceful struggle to uphold the values of justice, consolidate state institutions and defend the rights of citizens who lack the minimum standards of decent living under harsh conditions resulting from the collapse of the currency, rising prices and deteriorating economic conditions.

Popular anger against the Presidential Alliance Council in the city of Taiz has escalated after the collapse of the local currency, in which one dollar equals 2,000 Yemeni riyals, which the authorities faced with repression and incitement against activists and protesters.
