Borrell: UNRWA is a critical lifeline for millions of Palestinians

WORLD, Feb. 05 (YPA) – Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, stressed that UNRWA is a critical lifeline for millions of Palestinians suffering from catastrophic hunger and the outbreak of diseases.

“UNRWA is a critical lifeline for millions of Palestinians suffering from catastrophic hunger and the outbreak of diseases. An independent investigation into allegations is needed, but defunding would amount to collective punishment,” Josep Borrell said in a post on his X account.

Several countries had suspended their funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), jeopardizing the sustainability of vital life-saving services provided by UNRWA to millions of refugees in its five operational areas, especially in the Gaza Strip.

These decisions by those countries were in response to Zionist allegations against 12 UNRWA employees. UNRWA warned that it might have to halt its services in the Gaza Strip by the end of February due to the suspension of aid from several countries.

In a statement, UNRWA stated, “The humanitarian crisis in the region is worsening, as the suspension of funding puts relief operations at risk.”

It added, “If the funding remains suspended, we will likely be forced to cease our operations by the end of February.”
