WORLD, Jul. 04 (YPA) – At least six people were killed and 24 were wounded in a shooting at a July Fourth parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, police said Monday.
Fox News quoted eyewitnesses who managed to escape the scene as saying that there could be many victims, noting that there were bloodied bodies, one of them covered in a blanket.
Lake County major crime task force spokesperson Christopher Covelli said at a news conference that the gunman apparently opened fire on parade-goers from a rooftop using a rifle that was recovered at the scene.
Covelli said police believe there was only one shooter and warned that he should still be considered armed and dangerous.
Police have not released any details about the victims or wounded.
The United States has been witnessing a growing phenomenon of mass murder, affecting schools, markets and public gatherings.
