Security Council welcomes extension of humanitarian truce in Yemen

SANAA, June.04 (YPA) – The UN Security Council welcomed on Friday the extension of the UN-brokered humanitarian truce in Yemen for additional two months.

The council appreciated in a statement the measures taken by the parties to maintain the truce, which led to conducting of flights between Sanaa, Amman, and Cairo, and allowing the entry of oil derivatives ships to the port of Hodeida, as well as a significant reduction in civilian casualties.

“The fact that the armistice enabled the two parties to meet directly under the auspices of the United Nations,” it added.

The Council expressed its hope that the truce could be translated into a permanent ceasefire and a comprehensive political settlement in Yemen under the auspices of the United Nations.

The statement called on the Yemeni parties to continue to negotiate under the auspices of the United Nations and to communicate with each other in the spirit of mutual respect and reconciliation.

Last week, the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced that an agreement had been reached to extend the humanitarian truce in Yemen for additional two months.
