British foreign secretary urges Western allies to supply Ukraine with heavy weapons

SANAA, April 28 (YPA) – British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss said Western allies should “redouble” their support for the government in Kiev by providing the heavy weapons they need to “get Russia out of the whole of Ukraine.”

The events of the past months should be “a catalyst for broader change and comprehensive reform of the West’s approach to international security,” she said.’

She stressed the need of a new approach, one that blends strong security with economic security, an approach that builds stronger global alliances, and where free states are more assertive and self-confident and  an approach that recognizes political geography.”

“At home, this should mean increasing defence spending with a NATO minimum of 2% of national income,” she said, adding  that “this is a limit, not a ceiling,” stressing that “the UK needs to strengthen its military while building alliances with free nations around the world, using its economic power to deter aggressors who do not abide by the rules.”

Truss said the G7 should serve as “an economic NATO to defend collective prosperity, while the Western military alliance (NATO) must be ready to open its doors to countries such as Finland and Sweden.”
