Russia: We don’t want to press the nuclear button

SANAA, March 03 (YPA) – Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on  Wednesday that Moscow does not want to reach a “nuclear button pressure” scenario in relations with Western countries under any circumstances.

This came during her remarks to Colombia’s W Radio.

Asked why Russia could resort to the use of nuclear weapons, she said: “We are starting from the fact that this appalling scenario will never be achieved under any circumstances.”

She considered that this question could be the result of a “confusion” between Russia and other countries, saying: “You seem to be confusing us with the United States; the Russian Federation has never talked about it.”

Russia had repeatedly stated its position on the possibility of using nuclear weapons.

This comes as the Russian-led special military operation continues in Donbass, south-eastern Ukraine.

On 24 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a special military operation in Donbass, south-eastern Ukraine, following the official request of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics for Russia’s support in the face of Ukrainian forces.
