Russia condemns US embargo on Cuba, declares support for Havana

SANAA, Sept. 29 (YPA) – Russian Foreign Ministry condemned Washington’s decision to strengthen the embargo imposed on Cuba, and considered it illegal and inhumane policy, declaring its readiness to provide support and assistance to the Republic of Cuba.

On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Moscow strongly condemns Washington’s strengthening of the embargo imposed on Cuba, and is ready to continue providing the necessary support to Havana.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Lavrov strongly condemned “this inhuman and illegal policy of Washington.”

He considered that “all the pressure measures taken against Havana restrict the inalienable natural rights of not only Cuban citizens, but also the rights of American citizens that are completely illegal and blatantly violate the basic principles of the United Nations Charter.”

Lavrov stressed that his country is always ready to provide the necessary support to our strategic partner and friend – the Republic of Cuba.

Last May, the administration of US President Donald Trump returned Cuba to the list of countries that do not fully cooperate with its “efforts to combat terrorism,” in a new escalation of tension between the two countries.

The US State Department justified this step by refusing Colombia’s request to extradite the leaders of the rebel “National Liberation Army” after it claimed responsibility for an attack on a Bogota police academy in January 2019, which killed 22 people.
