MOSCOW, June 9 (YPA) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday condemned Washington’s efforts to extend the arms embargo imposed on Tehran.
“The United States has unilaterally exited from the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the six major international powers and now has no legal right to try to use UN Resolution 2231 to extend the arms embargo indefinitely,” the US Associated Press agency quoted Lavrov as saying in a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres and the members of the UN Security Council.
Lavrov added that the talk of the US Department of State about not abiding by the implementation of the obligations contained in the nuclear agreement is in fact “irresponsible and ridiculous”, as he said.
He stressed Moscow’s serious opposition to extending the arms embargo on Iran for an indefinite period, and to America’s resort to extending the embargo resolution, which was issued by the UN Security Council in 2015 and ends in October this year.
“We are working on the basis that the United Nations does not become a hostage of the political situation in America that decided to exit from this nuclear agreement,” Lavrov explained.
