SANAA, June 4 (YPA) – The European Commission decided on Wednesday to classify the emerging corona virus as a “moderate threat” to workers’ health.
The move allows European Union employers to apply less stringent safety measures in the workplace, compared to what they would have applied if the virus was considered a serious risk.
The decision may have broad economic and health implications, as it may affect the costs that companies will incur when fully resuming their activities, and also the safety of workers.
According to European Union rules, the emerging coronavirus has been classified as a third-level threat on a list of four, the highest of which is the fourth.
European Union rules state that a third-level virus “can infect a person with severe disease and represents a serious risk to workers, and it may spread among members of society, but there are usually effective methods available for prevention or treatment.”
The biomarkers classified at the fourth level are those that pose a “serious risk” for transmission and for which there are no means of prevention or treatment.
The European Commission said the decision was made after consulting scientists and the World Health Organization
