UN Chief warns of potential war in Gulf region

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (YPA) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday warned of a possible war breakout in the Gulf region that the world could not afford.

“We are currently witnessing a worrying prospect of an armed conflict in the Gulf region that the world cannot bear,” Guterres said in a speech on Tuesday during the opening of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The UN Chief expressed his hope that the progress achieved in the field of nuclear non-proliferation would be maintained thanks to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program.

In his speech, Guterres pointed to a wide circle of conflicts and disputes in the world. “With any minor misjudgment likely to trigger a major confrontation, we must do everything possible to achieve a commitment to rationality and restraint,” he said.

The 74th session of the UN General Assembly began on Tuesday, coinciding with a major tension in the Gulf region between Iran on the one hand and the United States and its allies, especially Saudi Arabia and Israel, on the other hand, especially after the attack on two vital oil facilities of “Aramco” on September 14 that resulted in halting more than 50% of the Kingdom’s oil production.
