UNICEF calls for end to violence against children around world

SANAA, Aug. 3 (YPA) – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Saturday called for an end to violence against children in various part of the world, including Yemen, where 16 children were killed and wounded in an attack on a market in Saada province last week.

On the 10th anniversary of the Security Council resolution 1882, which highlights children and armed conflict, the United Nations said that all parties to the conflict and influential people have a responsibility for the safety of children wherever they may be.

The organization confirmed that last July was devastating for children living in areas of conflict and war in the Middle East and North Africa, where killings and violence are committed on a daily basis.

UNICEF said that two schools and a hospital were attacked in Tripoli of Libya; and at least four students were killed at a school in Sudan; and four children were killed and 14 others injured in an attack on a market in Saada province in Yemen.

According to the organization, the acts of violence have led to the injuring of 359 children in Syria, and many Palestinian children were injured in violent incidents, bringing the cumulative total to 477 children at least.

“Those who commit such violence are failed people and fail very much to fulfill their obligations under international law,” the organization said. “This is very unfortunate.”
