Ministry of Electricity reports $4.6 bln losses during 4 years of war

SANAA, April 1 (YPA) – Ministry of Electricity and Energy in the National Salvation Government has reported more than $ 4.6 billion direct and indirect losses and damage in assets of the General Electricity Corporation due to four years of the aggression on Yemen by Saudi-led coalition.

“The direct losses of the electricity sector as a result of the aggression were estimated at $ 2,668,452,000 dollars, while the indirect losses were estimated at $ two billion dollars,” said a report issued by the ministry and Yemen Press Agency obtained a copy of it.

The ministry noted that these are just initial statistics of the losses and damage resulted from targeting of the generating and transforming stations belonging to the corporation in several provinces by Saudi-led coalition.

The report referred to the massacre committed by the US-backed Saudi-led coalition warplanes in Mocha district of Taiz province on Friday, July 24, 2015, which resulted in killing of 80 people, injuring 300 others and destroying more than 200 housing units of employees of the steam power station.

The coalition’s systematic and deliberate aggression against the electricity sector’s infrastructure and facilities has doubled the suffering of the sector employees amounting more than 81,000 employees due to the cutoff of their salaries since October 2016 as a result of the halt of the power stations and the siege imposed on Yemen for four years, according to the report.
