UK expresses concern for lack of progress in implementation of Stockholm agreement between Yemeni parties

SANAA, Jan. 14 (YPA) – British ambassador to Yemen on Monday expressed his country’s concern over the lack of progress on the ground in the implementation of the Stockholm agreement signed by the Yemeni parties last month in Sweden.

The ambassador Michael Aron told Asharq Al-Awsat Newspaper that the need to submit the British draft resolution was a response to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich’s letter calling for the deployment of UN observers in Yemen’s western coastal city of Hodeidah.

At the same time, Aron confirmed that the new British draft resolution at the Security Council is free of political or humanitarian aspects, and has nothing to do with the Sweden agreement.

“I understand the criticism from some Yemenis for the previous draft resolution, but this resolution is completely different,” he said in response to a question about concerns expressed by several Yemeni parties regarding the previous resolution 2451 on the Stockholm agreement and the new draft resolution.

The UK’s ambassador pointed out that the new draft was submitted at the request of the United Nations, and its desire to deploy a mission in Hodeidah. “This needs a Security Council resolution. We wrote the resolution only, and we have no political role in that.”

“General Patrick and his colleagues are temporarily working on the ground, according to a paragraph in the previous resolution that talked about the establishment of the mission, but there were no details,” he said.
