RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 26 (YPA) – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Sunday’s presidential runoff, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro to secure a fourth nonconsecutive term in office, according to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
With 97.69% of the vote counted, Lula secured 51.74% of valid votes, compared with 48.26% for Bolsonaro, giving him a lead of more than four million votes, according to electoral authorities.
Bolsonaro led the first round of voting on October 4, winning 47.03% of valid votes against Lula’s 45.16%. The results forced the two candidates into a runoff after neither secured an outright majority.
Lula previously served as president from 2003 to 2010 before returning to office in 2023 following his victory in the 2022 election. He is scheduled to begin his fourth nonconsecutive term on January 5, 2027.
