PARIS, Oct. 06 (YPA) – The French Navy announced that a fire broke out aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle while it was docked at the naval base in Toulon, southern France, on Monday evening.
The carrier was undergoing technical maintenance at the time. The Navy confirmed that no injuries were reported and that the incident had no impact on the vessel’s nuclear facilities.
According to a statement from the Maritime Prefecture for the Mediterranean, a fire alarm was triggered shortly before 11:30 a.m. local time in a technical room measuring no more than 10 square meters, near the aircraft hangar, which was empty at the time.
The carrier’s crew immediately intervened to fight the fire before being joined by naval firefighting teams from the Toulon base.
The fire was brought under control at 12:35 p.m. and was declared fully extinguished at 1:50 p.m.
The Charles de Gaulle entered a technical maintenance phase at the end of August, which is scheduled to continue until early December.
It is France’s only aircraft carrier of its kind, while the United States is the only other country to operate nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
