Hackers steal personal data of more than 3 million Pentagon employees

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (YPA) – US media outlets reported that hackers stole sensitive data on more than 3 million current and former US Defense Department (Pentagon) employees, including Social Security numbers and employment-related information.

The reports, citing a US defense official, said the breach The breach affected 2.76 million living people and another 294,000 who are deceased, the official said.

The scope and sensitivity of the exposed information could raise national security concerns, particularly because the files included details about the jobs performed by military and civilian personnel.

According to the sources, the attackers are threatening to release the personal data of FBI employees. The agency found that the official portal used to post job vacancies was not adequately protected.

ABC News reported that the FBI had warned people who may have been affected by the breach. Employees were advised not to respond to suspicious calls or speak to the media.

Military Times reported last week that the department’s human resources data center had been breached, saying unauthorized access to the data lasted from October 2025 to July 2026.
