Meteorology warns residents of severe weather conditions

SANAA, Aug. 14 (YPA) – Yemen’s National Center of Meteorology and Early Warning on Friday warned residents in areas expected to receive rain of the risk of sudden flash floods in valleys and ravines, urging them to stay away from flood channels and avoid attempting to cross them during and after rainfall.

According to the center’s weather bulletin, moderate to heavy thundery rain, accompanied by strong downdraft winds and hail, is expected in parts of Shabwa, Abyan, Lahj, Dhalea, Taiz, Ibb, Dhamar, Raymah, Sanaa, Mahwit, Amran, Hajjah, Saada and the Tihama Plain.

Rain of varying intensity, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms, is also expected in parts of Hadramout, Bayda, Marib and Jawf, as well as along the western, southern and eastern coasts and adjacent inland areas.

The center warned residents of sudden flash floods in valleys and ravines, urging them to stay away from flood channels and not attempt to cross them during or after rainfall.

It also warned of thunderstorms, hail and strong downdraft winds, advising people to avoid elevated areas and stay away from towers and tall trees.

It further advised against using mobile phones during thunderstorms and recommended disconnecting electricity during rainfall and thunderstorms.

The center also warned of rockfalls and mudslides, particularly on slopes and mountain roads, as well as the collapse of buildings and traditional mud structures due to continued rainfall.

It urged relevant authorities to take necessary precautionary measures to protect lives and property.
