Sanaa moves to localize plastics industry, boost local production

SANAA, Aug. 10 (YPA) – An expanded meeting in Sanaa, chaired by Acting Minister of Economy, Industry and Investment Sam al-Bashiri, discussed on Monday the state of Yemen’s plastics industry, plans to develop it and expand production, as part of efforts to localize industries and strengthen domestic production.

In the meeting, the acting minister stressed the government’s commitment to addressing challenges facing industrial sectors and protecting local products, noting the potential for advancing the plastics industry given the capabilities of domestic factories and the high quality of their products.

He said the ministry, in coordination with relevant authorities, had established mechanisms to regulate contract manufacturing between importers and local manufacturers, ensuring the rights of both sides while preserving their respective market shares.

The meeting, attended by ministry officials, the Finance Ministry’s undersecretary, and a number of plastic products manufacturers and importers, reviewed the current state of the plastics industry and requirements for developing and expanding production.

It also concluded with several recommendations, including strengthening protection for locally manufactured products, encouraging importers to gradually shift toward domestic manufacturing, and studying the establishment of a joint-stock company for importers to manufacture plastic products.
