Irish MPs urge Germany to stop persecuting pro-Palestine activists

DUBLIN, July 25 (YPA) – A seven-member Irish parliamentary delegation from both the Irish and European Parliaments has called on the Irish government to send official observers to the trial of the “Ulm 5” in Germany.

The five pro-Palestinian activists are accused of storming a facility belonging to the Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems in Ulm last September.

The delegation also urged Prime Minister Miguel Martin to raise the case of Irish activist Daniel Tatlow-Devale with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during his upcoming visit to Dublin.

Sinn Féin MP Mairead Farrell noted that Daniel is spending 23 hours a day in solitary confinement and is allowed only one hour of visits per month, describing this as “cruel and unacceptable.”

The delegation criticized the detention of the defendants inside a glass cage in the Stuttgart courtroom, considering it a violation of their right to a fair trial and access to their lawyers.

The activists, who hold Irish, British, German, and Spanish nationalities, face charges of vandalism and causing damage estimated at one million euros.

The delegation affirmed its intention to follow the case, return to attend future hearings, and pressure Dublin to officially take over the file.
