Niger files formal request to withdraw from ICC

NIAMEY, June 25 (YPA) – Niger has filed a formal request to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, following a joint declaration with Mali and Burkina Faso in 2025.

The decision comes as part of a political shift by the three Sahel countries following military coups between 2020-2023 and escalating tensions with the West.

The ICC confirmed that the withdrawal will not take effect before June 18, 2027, with Niger’s legal obligations continuing until that date.

The three countries are facing an escalation in violence from al-Qaeda and ISIS, amid accusations that their armies are committing abuses against civilians.
