HADRAMOUT, May 19 (YPA) – A government decision in Hadramout to raise diesel prices has triggered widespread public anger and calls for protests across the province.
According to local sources, the Aden-based oil company approved a new price of 1,800 Yemeni riyals, which equals $7.54, per liter of locally produced diesel, an increase of 280 riyals per liter.
This brings the price of a 20-liter gallon to around 36,000 Yemeni riyals (almost $150.86) in cities including Mukalla and Seiyun.
The increase has intensified criticism among residents, who point out that diesel in Marib remains significantly cheaper, at about 8,000 riyals per 20-liter gallon since 2023, fueling accusations of unequal pricing policies and economic hardship.
Activists and social media users described the move as unjust, with growing calls for street protests and broader civil action in rejection of the price hike and worsening living conditions.
