General strike carried out in Italy in solidarity with Gaza and to reject attack on Freedom Flotilla

ROME, May 18 (YPA) – Italy witnessed a general strike on Monday that paralyzed the transport, education, and logistics sectors.

The strike, called by unions, protested against rearmament programs, rejected what they called Israel’s “genocide” against Palestinians, and expressed solidarity with the “Global Steadfastness Flotilla” to break the Gaza blockade.

The strike coincided with demonstrations took place in several cities under the slogan “Stop everything,” protesting the high cost of living, military policies, and increased armament spending at the expense of health and education.

In Rome, protesters gathered, waving Palestinian flags and holding banners accusing the government of “complicity” in “crimes” with Israel and they chanted “Free Palestine” in rejection of the attack on the flotilla.

The strike disrupted Metro Line C in Rome, Line 1 in Naples, and some suburban trains in Milan, while port workers in Livorno staged similar protests.
