WASHINGTON, May 12 (YPA) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) secretly carried out a series of military strikes deep inside Iranian territory, amid implicit backing from the US administration and efforts to encourage other Gulf states to join the war, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday evening.
The newspaper said one of the attacks targeted a refinery on Lavan Island in early April, causing a large fire and shutting the facility down around the time President Donald Trump was preparing to announce a ceasefire.
Sources familiar with the matter said the UAE had launched military strikes against Iran, describing the Gulf monarchy as an active combatant in a conflict in which it had long been one of Tehran’s primary targets.
The attacks indicate that the UAE is increasingly willing to use military force to safeguard its economic power and expanding influence across the Middle East.
US officials reportedly viewed the move as another strong message to Tehran, particularly amid escalating tensions surrounding Iran’s military and nuclear activities.
According to the report, US President Donald Trump was pleased by the development, viewing it as evidence that other Middle Eastern countries were prepared to play a more active role in confronting Iran rather than relying solely on the United States and “Israel”.
