Deadly clashes in Abyan, Shabwa highlight ongoing security chaos in southern Yemen

SHABWA, March 31 (YPA) – The provinces of Abyan and Shabwa, under the control of pro-Saudi factions, witnessed armed confrontations on Tuesday that left casualties, amid ongoing security instability across southern regions.

A local source in Abyan confirmed the killing of Special Forces recruit Ali Saeed Awad al-Majhali (33), who was shot by tribal gunmen in the city of Ahwar.

According to the source, the incident occurred when clashes erupted between rival tribal groups in the crowded Ahwar market over a tribal revenge dispute. A stray bullet struck al-Majhali, killing him instantly.

In Shabwa, similar confrontations involving light and medium weapons broke out in Ataq, the provincial capital, between armed groups affiliated with Ali Baoum—brother of the commander of the Second Shabwa Defense Brigade—and others loyal to Ali Mubarak Thabet Al-Khulaifi. The clashes took place in front of Al-Diyar restaurant in the city center.

A local source attributed the violence to a dispute over land ownership, noting that the intensity of gunfire caused widespread panic among residents. No casualties or material damage were reported at the time of writing.

These incidents underscore the extent of security disorder in areas controlled by pro-Saudi factions, highlighting the continued absence of effective state institutions since 2016 and the failure of these forces to ensure civilian safety.
