ADEN, Feb. 17 (YPA) – a wave of unrest, with armed groups affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) blocking roads and spreading across key areas of the city.
Local sources in the southern Yemeni city of Aden reported that gunmen closed the road near the Aden Hotel roundabout, just meters from the headquarters of the Aden Security Administration, and deployed around military and security facilities controlled by the Council.
The unrest was reportedly driven by demands for unpaid salaries, with the armed groups threatening further escalation if their demands were not met.
In a statement issued yesterday evening, the STC’s leadership pledged to escalate its opposition to the Saudi-backed government headed by Shaea Al-Zindani, following the gradual return of some ministers to Aden.
The city has recently come under Saudi influence after the reported withdrawal of Emirati forces from southern and eastern Yemen late last year.
