Ataq gripped by lawlessness after clashes between rival factions

SHABWA, Feb. 13 (YA) – (YPA) -The city of Ataq, the capital of Shabwa Governorate, is facing growing insecurity after a series of deadly clashes between UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) fighters and Saudi-backed forces left six dead, including civilians.

According to local witnesses, the military units stationed throughout the city seemed completely inactive, standing by without enforcing security or inspecting passersby, leaving the streets open to armed men in civilian attire.

Observers described the situation as a ‘field-level security vacuum,’ leaving residents uncertain about who is in control and warning that the lack of enforcement measures could pave the way for a new wave of violence amid escalating rhetoric between rival factions.

The unrest in Ataq highlights the wider instability across southern Yemen.  On Thursday, the UN envoy to Yemen told the Security Council that the region’s fragile security situation remains a significant obstacle to achieving lasting peace.
