Iran’s President appoints Ali Shamkhani as secretary of Supreme Defense Council

TEHRAN, Feb. 06 (YPA) – Iran’s President and Chairman of the Defense Council, Masoud Pezeshkian, appointed on Thursday Admiral Ali Shamkhani—the representative of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution to the council—as its new secretary.

According to Iranian state television, the secretary of the Defense Council will be responsible for establishing and overseeing the council’s general secretariat and implementing its specialized programs.

These include designing and enhancing comprehensive defense readiness, developing mechanisms to counter emerging threats, fostering integration among the nation’s power structures within the defense sector, organizing defense diplomacy frameworks, and structuring strategic communications and perception warfare activities in the defense field.

The Defense Council was formed after the twelve-day war to address evolving security challenges. It would aim to improve coordination, enhance the effectiveness of defense-related decision-making, and strengthen high-level deterrence. Shamkhani has served on the council as the representative of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution since its inception.

Admiral Ali Shamkhani is a seasoned and distinguished commander within Iran’s armed forces. His long and active service dates back to the victory of the Islamic Revolution, during which he has held numerous key positions.
