Somalia sends strong message to Security Council

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (YPA) – The representative of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the Security Council, Abubakar Tahir Osman, announced his country’s categorical and absolute rejection of any unilateral recognition of the so-called “Somaliland”, describing the latest Israeli step as a “flagrant violation” of Somali sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.

This came in an official and urgent letter sent to the UN Security Council.

The letter stressed that the Israeli unilateral declaration poses a direct and serious threat to international peace and security, and would destabilize the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin.

The Somali delegate called on the members of the Security Council to take a firm position and categorically reject any action or declaration that detracts from the unity of Somalia or affects its territorial integrity.

It stressed that the north-western region was an “integral part” of the territory of the Federal Republic of Somalia, stressing that its legal and historical status would not be changed by any external actions, adding that that any claims affecting the unity of Somalia are legally invalid and have no effect under international law.

In h isletter, Somalia expressed its deep concern over reports that this recognition is being used as a pretext for plans aimed at “forcibly transferring Palestinians” to northwestern Somalia, considering this a serious violation of international and humanitarian norms.

The representative of Somalia called on the international community to respect the sovereignty of the Somali state, affirming that the Somali people will not stand idly by in front of any attempts aimed at tearing its national fabric or trading with just causes to pass dubious agendas in the region.
