“Dignity Movement” in Shabwa signals to establish independent ‘Balhaf governorate’

SHABWA, Oct. 25 (YPA) -The Peaceful Dignity Movement in the Al-Wahidi areas of Shabwa Governorate announced on Friday the resumption of its field activities and peaceful protests, citing what it described as the UAE-backed authorities’ disregard for the legitimate demands of local residents and their failure to honor previous promises.

In a statement published on Facebook, the movement said that the resumption of protests in the coastal district of Radhum on the Arabian Sea came after the local authority reneged on promises previously made during an official mediation, which had led to a temporary suspension of their activities.

The statement described the authorities’ response as a disregard for the rights and status of the people of Al-Wahidi.

The statement also revealed that the movement may escalate its demands if neglect continues, potentially calling for the creation of a new, independent governorate named “Balhaf Governorate,” to enable local residents to manage their resources directly.

It emphasized that “ignoring rights does not create stability, and justice is the only path to building trust,” noting that their areas contribute up to 60% of Shabwa’s wealth, yet continue to suffer from marginalization and exclusion.

It added that its demands are not for personal gain, but focus on the rights of the local population to manage their resources and achieve equitable development.

The movement held the UAE-backed authorities fully responsible for any consequences arising from continued neglect, affirming its determination to continue peaceful struggle using escalatory measures until all their rights are secured.

Previously, UAE-backed authorities had demolished the movement’s headquarters at the end of August, attempted to arrest its leader, Saleh Mansour bin Dabi Al-Qumishi, and continued to suppress protests demanding an end to marginalization and exclusion of local residents since May.
