Journalist threatened with death after exposing $2 million corruption deal in Abyan

ABYAN, Oct. 20 (YPA) – Journalist Radfan Omar received on Monday a death threat from a pro-STC leader named Abu Mohammed al-Marqashi in Abyan province, south of Yemen.

The threat came after the journalist published details of an alleged $2 million corruption deal, the value of a grant allocated for projects in the province, which is controlled by UAE-backed factions.

Omar confirmed on his Facebook page that the threats from al-Marqashi, a member of the local grant team, came after he published a statement by the Director General of the Abyan Water Corporation criticizing the workflow and the assignment of projects to a private institution in Aden instead of the local authority.

The journalist also indicated that he was targeted by the director of Khanfar district, who accused him of “incitement” and demanded an investigation into his publication of the news.

He held Al-Marqashi fully responsible for any harm he might inflict on him, highlighting the string of incidents targeting journalists in the southern provinces.
