Fishermen block international highway in Hadramout

HADRAMOUT, Oct. 12 (YPA) – Dozens of fishermen in the coastal town of Al-Musayni’a, located in the Raydah district of Hadramout, blocked an international highway in protest against the recent decision by authorities loyal to the Saudi-led coalition to allow the use of the banned “Hawi” method for catching sardines.

They took to blocking the road after repeatedly urging pro-coalition authorities to curb sardine fishing using this method, which contributes to the destruction of fish stocks.

The protest led to a complete halt in traffic. Protesters considered the decision to allow sardine fishing a blatant violation of regulations aimed at protecting marine resources during the fish spawning season.

They called for the pro-coalition authorities to immediately revoke this “suspicious exemption”, demanding accountability for those who authorized it.

Catching Sardines by using the massive “Hawi” nets is one of the most harmful practices to the marine environment. This method not only targets sardines but also captures various smaller fish species, endangering fish stocks in the long run.
