Bakery owners in Taiz to launch strike in protest of new bread price

TAIZ, Oct. 10 (YPA) – Bakery owners in the Yemeni city of Taiz, which is controlled by the Saudi-led coalition, are preparing to launch a widespread strike in protest in protest over a newly imposed bread price by local authorities, amid growing fears of a looming fuel crisis that could further deteriorate already dire living conditions.

Local sources reported that the decision to go on strike comes in response to a recent directive by pro-coalition local authorities setting the price of one kilogram of bread at 1,200 Yemeni riyals.

Bakery owners argued that the new price is unfair, economically unviable, and leads to significant financial losses due to the ongoing economic collapse and rising input costs.

The escalation follows a crackdown by pro-coalition authorities, who shut down several bakeries and ovens that refused to comply with the new pricing directive. In response, bakery owners began organizing for a large-scale strike.

This escalation also comes amid reports warning of a looming fuel crisis, early signs of which began to appear on Thursday.

The fuel crisis is already disrupting transportation and making it increasingly difficult to secure essential supplies needed to keep bakeries running — pushing the city to the brink of a compounded humanitarian crisis.
