Israeli ambassador to Athens provokes anger in Greek political circles

SANAA, Aug. 04 (YPA) – Angry reactions in Greek political circles erupted against statements by the Israeli ambassador to Greece, Noam Katz, regarding wall writings in Athens, which he considered “anti-Semitic,” in addition to his talk of security concerns among Israeli tourists.

In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Katz criticized some slogans written on the streets of Athens in support of Palestine and expressed the concerns of Israeli tourists, prompting a response from the mayor of Athens, Charis Doukas, and opposition parties.

“The Israeli ambassador has crossed all limits. Athens and Greece are hospitable to all supporters of peace. We are proud of our citizens who are protesting the policies of the Israeli government in Gaza,” Costas Zacharidis, spokesman for the Radical Left Coalition (Syriza), and a member of the Athens City Council, said in a post on the X platform.

The New Left party issued a statement saying: “The Israeli ambassador expressed his annoyance with the pro-Palestine events in the city, as if he were calling on the Athens municipality to intervene, and this is unacceptable.”

The statement indicated that what encouraged the ambassador to make such statements was the silence of the Greek government.
