UN envoy addresses prisoners’ issue, women’s protests, opening roads in briefing to SC
NEW YORK, June 12 (YPA) – The UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, briefed on Thursday the Security Council (SC) on developments in Yemen, affirming the international consensus that a negotiated settlement is the best solution to end the conflict and achieve stability in the region.
Grundberg noted the fragility of the situation on the front lines and the ongoing clashes in Marib and called for responsibility to be taken to resume ceasefire discussions.
He commended the reopening of some roads, such as the Dhalea road, and urged the preservation of these achievements and efforts to open more roads to support the economy and build confidence, calling for abandoning futile conflicts and adopting pragmatism to alleviate humanitarian and economic suffering.
The UN envoy emphasized the protection of civilian space, addressing the women’s protests in Aden, Taiz, Lahj, and Abyan, which demanded improved living conditions and the payment of salaries.
Regarding the issue of war prisoners, he noted that a year had passed since the last meeting on the release of detainees and called for progress on this issue based on the “all for all” principle.
He also confirmed his work to develop a roadmap that includes a ceasefire, economic reforms, and a comprehensive political process.
