WASHINTGTON, June 12 (YPA) – In shocking and new remarks, the Commander of the United States Central Command (Centcom), General Michael Kurilla, acknowledged that American and Israeli forces have failed to neutralize Yemen’s military capabilities.
Speaking at a US House Armed Services Committee hearing, General Kurilla stated that despite extensive military efforts, the United States and “Israel” have not succeeded in deterring or eliminating the threat posed by Yemeni forces.
Kurilla noted that, despite enduring repeated strikes, Yemeni forces remain capable of launching explosive drone attacks against “Israel” and carrying out operations targeting Israeli-linked maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
He further acknowledged that the destruction of Yemen’s civilian infrastructure had not achieved the core objectives of the military campaign—namely, reducing the missile and drone capabilities of forces in Sana’a.
The US ramped up its military campaign in Yemen in March under the pretext of protecting international shipping. The strikes targeted civilian neighborhoods, airports, ports, fuel storage facilities, and correctional institutions, resulting in thousands of civilian casualties.
This escalation was part of Washington’s broader effort to support Israel’s war in Gaza by attempting to cut off Yemeni support for the Palestinian resistance.
However, a ceasefire was later brokered through indirect talks between Washington and Sanaa, mediated by Oman. Under the agreement, the US halted its attacks on Yemen in exchange for a suspension of Yemeni military responses against US linked vessels in the region.
During the nearly 52-day confrontation, Yemeni forces shot down several American MQ-9 Reaper drones in addition to reportedly causing the crash of three F-18 fighter aircraft.
