US President threatens to impose 50% tariffs on EU

WASHINGTON, May 24 (YPA) – US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to impose 50% tariffs on the European Union starting early next month, amid what he described as stalled trade talks between the two sides.

Trump said dealing with the European Union was difficult and trade talks were going nowhere, so he proposed imposing 50% tariffs on the European bloc starting June 1, 2025.

“The European Union, which was created primarily to take advantage of the United States on trade, has been very difficult to deal with,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “Our negotiations with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I recommend imposing a 50% tariff on the European Union, effective June 1, 2025. No tariffs will be imposed if the product is made in the United States.”

Trump has expressed frustration with the stalemate in trade negotiations with the European Union, which insists on reducing tariffs to zero, despite the US president’s insistence on maintaining a 10% basic tariff on most imports.

Last week, he stated that the EU has proven extremely difficult to deal with in trade, claiming that “the bloc is even worse than China in many ways”.
