ADEN, April 24 (YPA) – Calls for a widespread popular uprising have been escalated in the city of Aden and the southern and eastern provinces of Yemen against the corruption and failure of the pro-coalition Aden government.
The calls that dozens of southern activists demanded for a popular uprising on social media platforms came after the economic and living conditions spiraling out of control due to the complete collapse of the local currency.
They urged merchants and shop owners in the southern provinces to declare civil disobedience, embark on a general strike, and participate in what has been described as a “popular uprising.”
Sources said that citizens in Aden and other southern and eastern provinces are experiencing extremely difficult conditions, with the local currency collapsing, which a dollar exceeds 2,500 riyals, amidst complete government silence and the absence of any indications of serious intervention to rescue the situation and limit the repercussions of the disaster.
Observers believe that the currency’s collapse is beyond the capabilities of the Aden-based central Bank and the bankrupt government, and that the collapse could only be halted by replacing it with a government of competencies.
On Tuesday, the Aden-based Money Changers Syndicate said that there were shortcomings in the Central Bank’s banking oversight department, leading to the Yemeni riyal’s continued sharp decline. This shortcoming is due to insufficient oversight of the banks or the failure to implement monetary policies effectively.
