Civil society organizations condemn arrest, intimidation of traders in Taiz

TAIZ, Oct. 20 (YPA) – Civil society organizations, unions, and federations in Taiz Governorate condemned on Saturday  the arrest of representatives from the Taiz Traders Forum by authorities loyal to Saudi-led coalition in the province, following their announcement of a strike in protest against the collapse of the local currency and the deteriorating economic situation.

In a statement, the civil society organizations and unions expressed their regret over what they described as “cowardly acts and incitement against the Taiz Traders Forum.”

The statement called on the local and security authorities affiliated with the coalition to establish the manifestations of the state, respect civilian rights, act swiftly, halt those procedures, release detainees without delay, and ensure the safety of citizens.

It stressed the commitment of civil society organizations and unions to continue their peaceful struggle for justice, strengthen state institutions, and defend citizens’ rights amid the challenges of currency collapse, rising prices, and economic decline.

Public discontent against the “Presidential Leadership” loyal to coalition has surged in Taiz City amid the collapse of the local currency, with the US dollar exchange rate exceeding 2000 Yemeni riyals for new banknotes. In response, the authorities have turned to repression and provocation against activists and demonstrators.
