Amnesty International calls on Slovenia, Montenegro to stop Portuguese-flagged MV Kathrin

WORLD, Oct. 01 (YPA) – Amnesty International has urged Slovenia and Montenegro to stop the Portuguese-flagged MV Kathrin, which is carrying explosives bound for Israel, from docking at their ports, given the clear risk that such cargo would contribute to the commission of war crimes in Gaza, Amnesty International said.

This call was made in a statement issued by the UK-based organization, highlighting a “clear risk” that the munitions aboard the “MV Catherine” could contribute to war crimes in Gaza.

According to Namibia’s government and Portugal’s Foreign Minister, the MV Kathrin’s cargo includes explosives destined for Israel.

Namibian authorities refused to allow the vessel to enter its main harbour in August, citing information from the ship’s operator that its cargo includes eight containers of RDX Hexogen explosives bound for Israel.

The organization reminded that under international humanitarian law, “the transfer of arms to a party in an armed conflict is prohibited” when there is a clear risk that they could be used to commit war crimes or other serious violations.
