MOSCOW, Sept. 26 (YPA) -Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that his country reserves the right to use nuclear weapons should an attack take place on neighboring Belarus, its ally in the war on Ukraine, Russian Today (RT) reported.
“We reserve the right to use nuclear weapons in the event of aggression against Russia or Belarus,” Putin said during a Russian Security Council meeting in Moscow on nuclear deterrence, indicating that this issue has been agreed upon with Minsk.
At the meeting, Putin called for updating the foundations of Russia’s state policy on nuclear deterrence, adding that it must be adapted to the current realities.
He added, “In the past year, experts from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Security Council, and other departments have carried out a thorough analysis to evaluate whether we need to adjust our strategy regarding the potential use of nuclear forces.”
