WORLD, July 13 (YPA) -The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, addressed a letter to the so-called Presidential Leadership Council, as the Saudi-controlled government in Aden is called, urging it to postpone the implementation of recent decisions by the Yemeni Central Bank, and to initiate an “economic dialogue.”
In his letter to President Al-Alimi, Grundberg wrote: ‘I am writing to you with the utmost urgency and concern regarding the recent decision by the Central Bank of Yemen, Decision No. 30 of 2024, which suspends the licenses of six banks. This decision affects communication with correspondent banks and the SWIFT system, leading to these banks losing access to both.”
The envoy pointed out that “the recent bank decisions will harm the Yemeni economy and ordinary citizens across the country.”
“The move could escalate tensions and potentially lead to military escalation,” he warned.
He continued: “To mitigate the potential economic damage and prevent further escalation, I urge you and the Central Bank to delay the implementation of the decisions until at least the end of August.”
“I also request that the PLC inform correspondent banks and SWIFT about the postponement and instruct them to refrain from taking any action that could negatively impact the six banks.”
Grundberg proposed a UN-sponsored dialogue between Yemeni parties to address the recent economic developments.
He emphasised that the dialogue should aim to find solutions that benefit all Yemenis and align with the commitments made by the parties.
