SANAA, July 16 (YPA) – French Interior Ministry announced on Sunday evening 845 cars were torched across the country as a way of the celebrating the National Day in France.
It added that police arrested over 508 suspects in riots that hit France on Friday and Saturday.
Comparing the number of people were arrested in this year is much higher than that of the previous year, with a total of 368 arrests, the ministry’s spokesman said.
At least 29 members of the security forces were injured in the acts of violence took place across France, according to the Interior Ministry statistics.
France has deployed 110,000 police and gendarmes to ensure the safety of national holiday revelers and the World Cup final, which France won Sunday night at Croatia’s expense in Moscow.
Torching cars is a bizarre and widespread phenomenon in France seen during national celebrations such as New Year’s eve and Bastille Day and during mass protests.
More than 10,000 cars were torched during mass protests against police brutality in 2005, largely focused around the north Parisian banlieue of Seine-Saint-Denis, media reported.
