Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits Japan

WORLD, Jan. 03 (YPA) – A magnitude-5.5 quake hit the Ishikawa Prefecture of the Noto region on Wednesday at around 10:54 a.m. local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of ten kilometers underwater. No tsunami threat has been declared.

Residents of Osaka also felt tremors, but this time they were much weaker and lasted much less.

A series of strong earthquakes, with a major one of preliminary 7.6 magnitude, occurred on Monday at a shallow depth on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture. The JMA has officially named it the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.

Residents also felt these tremors in Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo. The disaster was the worst to hit the region since 1885, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
