GENEVA, Oct. 10 (YPA) – Spokesman of World Health Organization (WHO), Tarik Jasarevic, stated that the organization is urging the opening of a humanitarian corridor to deliver “vital supplies” to the Gaza Strip.
“The WHO calls for an end to the violence and needs a humanitarian corridor to provide people with critical supplies,” Jasarevic said in a new conference in Geneva on Tuesday. “The organization is working in cooperation with its partners to solve this problem.”
He added that the organization will allocate one million dollars to purchase medical supplies sufficient to treat up to 500 patients.
Jasarevic pointed out that, until October 9, the organization knew of the killing of 6 health workers and the injury of 4 others in Gaza, noting that 8 medical institutions and 9 ambulances were damaged during the attacks.
For his part, spokesman for the United Nations Department for the Coordination of Humanitarian Issues, Jens Laerke, said that 4 schools in Gaza had been damaged since last Saturday, adding over 187.5 thousand people have left their homes so far.
Laerke explained that the occupation authorities reduced electricity supplies to Gaza between 3 and 4 hours per day, noting that the only source of electricity is the local power plant, which “may remain without fuel within several days.”
He stressed that Israel’s decision to cut off water will affect more than 610,000 people in Gaza and lead to a serious shortage of drinking water.
