UN envoy calls on conflicting parties in Yemen to discuss sustainable solutions to economic challenges
NEW YORK, Aug 16 (YPA) – The situation in Yemen will not witness a sustainable improvement, “unless the two parties meet” to discuss and agree on sustainable solutions to Yemen’s economic and financial challenges, the UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said.
This came during his periodic briefing on Wednesday to the UN Security Council on the situation in Yemen.
Regarding the continued suffering of Yemenis from the coalition’s insistence to reduce the flights, especially patients, students and businessmen, Grundberg explained affirmed that the expansion of flights to and from Sanaa airport remains an urgent concern to relieve some of the pressure on Yemeni civilians seeking to travel to obtain health care, educational and employment opportunities.
The UN envoy reiterated his condemnation of the assassination of a World Food Program official, Moayad Hamidi, in Taiz city by unknown gunmen.
Regarding the failure of the prisoner exchange deal, he encouraged the parties to continue working closely with his office to achieve the goal of unconditional release of prisoners and detainees based on the principle of “all for all”.
Grundberg called on all Yemeni parties to return to the negotiating table to reach a comprehensive peace, to refrain from rhetorical escalation and to continue using the channels of dialogue that were established under the armistice through the Military Coordination Committee.
The UN envoy indicated that calm has prevailed on all fronts despite the end of the truce, with the exception of some violations in Taiz and Marib.
