Niger’s military junta declares state of high alert following French attack on military post

WORLD, Aug 09 (YPA) – Niger’s military junta declared state of high alert following a French attack on a National Guard post and violating the country’s airspace.

Local media quoted the military council as saying that the French army attacked a position of the armed forces “to liberate its terrorist allies.”

It explained that the French army attacked the National Guard post in the region of Tillaberi, in the west of the country and freed 16 imprisoned terrorists.

Niger’s military council accused former colonial power France of violating airspace closed since Sunday as Western and African countries threatened to intervene militarily in Niamey in response to the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum.

The National Council for the Protection of the Homeland (CNSP), the military junta that seized power in Niger last July 26, said that “ A French military aircraft “deliberately cut off all contact with air traffic control on entering our air space,” from 6:39-11:15 am (0539-1015 GMT) on Wednesday.”
