WORLD, July 11 (YPA) – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Sweden’s accession to NATO would mark a historic moment for NATO.
After NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg’s statement that Turkey had agreed to accept Sweden’s accession protocol, Rishi Sunak wrote on Twitter: “This is an historic moment for NATO that makes us all safer. Sweden, we look forward to welcoming you into the Alliance.”
At the NATO summit in Vilnius on Tuesday, Sunak is seeking to persuade alliance members to raise defence spending to 2 percent of their gross domestic product.
Britain has met this requirement and is striving to raise its spending to 2.5 percent of its output.
The NATO secretary-general announced on Monday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had agreed to refer Sweden’s application to join the alliance to the Turkish parliament.
