WHO: More than 100,000 children in Sudan are malnourished

WORLD, July 04 (YPA) -The catastrophic war between the Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been going on for more than two and a half months, has had significant negative repercussions on the civilian population there, including killing, displacement and lack of basic services, amid continuing warnings of humanitarian tragedies threatening millions.

“Over 100,000 children under the age of five in Sudan suffer from acute malnutrition and need specialized care,”  said Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, the  WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, expressing   fears that malnutrition will worsen, with the inability to access or afford local markets, as well as the suspension of WFP operations.

The official warned of the spread of epidemics and the outbreak of diseases with the entry of the rainy season due to the lack of drinking water supply, amid the outage of some water stations from service due to the war.

The ongoing violence threatens the lives of millions, amid reports of hundreds of thousands of people resorting to polluted rivers to secure drinking water.

Al-Mandhari’s remarks come after warnings by WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of the lack of water, food, medicine and electricity supplies in Sudan, as fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces intensified, which resulted in about seventy percent of health facilities out of service.
