NIAMEY, Feb. 05 (YPA) – At least nine people were killed last Wednesday in an attack led by “heavily armed terrorists” on a Malian refugee camp in western Niger, neighboring Mali.
French Press Agency on Saturday quoted a local official as saying “the attack resulted in nine deaths, one person was wounded, and six people are missing.”
He added that the attack targeted a Malian refugee camp near a town located 65 kilometers northwest of Tilea, in the Tahoua region on the border with Mali, on the evening of February 1.
“The heavily armed terrorists arrived on about ten motorcycles, stormed the camp and opened fire before fleeing to Mali,” the official said.
Tahoua and Tillaberi are located in the border area between Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and they are two large unstable regions that have witnessed since 2017 criminal acts committed by armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
