Two dead, dozens injured in Iraq stampede at Gulf Cup final

BAGHDAD, Jan. (YPA) – Tow persons were killed and over 60 injured in a stampede ahead of a soccer match in the Iraqi city of Basra on Thursday, before Iraq Gulf Cup final, a Yemen Press Agency correspondent said.

The correspondent confirmed that the masses have been flocking since early morning from all Iraqi provinces to Basra Stadium to support the “Lions of Mesopotamia” team against its Omani counterpart in the Gulf Cup final of 25.

He pointed out that the tournament organizers put forward a proposal to transfer the match from the Iraqi city of Basra to Kuwait, due to the large stampede of fans.

The Sultanate of Oman had canceled the transfer of the Omani fans to Iraq after the stampede.
